What occurs during the Babinski reflex?

During the Babinski reflex, the hallmark response is the fanning out of the toes when the sole of the foot is stimulated, typically along the lateral aspect from the heel to the toes. This reflex is a normal response in infants due to their immature nervous system and is often tested as part of a neurological exam. In adults, the presence of the Babinski reflex can suggest neurological conditions, as it is not typically seen in a healthy adult response. Instead, the normal adult response to foot stimulation is downward pointing of the toes which is known as the plantar reflex.
