What is a pulmonary contusion?

A pulmonary contusion is an injury to the underlying lung tissue. This often occurs as a result of blunt trauma to the chest, which can lead to bruising of the lung parenchyma (the functional tissue of the lungs). The injury can disrupt the normal structure of the lung and cause hemorrhage or edema, resulting in impaired gas exchange and potentially leading to respiratory distress.

In cases of pulmonary contusion, patients may present with symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest pain, or difficulty breathing, depending on the severity of the injury. As the contusion evolves, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) if not managed properly.
